Introduction

The Union Cabinet has approved the PMSurya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore. This ambitious scheme aims to install rooftop solar systems and provide free electricity up to 300 units per month to one crore households.

Key Features of the Scheme

• Central Financial Assistance (CFA):
  • 60% subsidy on the system cost for solar installations up to 2 kW.
  • 40% subsidy on additional cost for systems between 2 to 3 kW.
  • The CFA is capped at a maximum of 3 kW per household.
• Solar Adoption in Rural Areas: A Model Solar Village will be developed in each district to promote rooftop solar adoption.

Impact on Solar Capacity and the Environment

The scheme aims to add 30 GW of rooftop solar capacity, generating 1,000 billion units (BUs) of electricity over a 25-year period. It will help reduce 720 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability.

Job Creation and Economic Benefits

With around 17 lakh direct jobs projected in manufacturing, logistics, sales, installation, and other sectors, the PMSurya Ghar scheme will boost the economy and foster employment growth.
